Alliant International University was founded in 2001 by the merging of the California School of Professional Psychology and United States International University. Its home campus is in San Diego, California, but it has five other sites in the state (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Irvine, Sacramento, and Fresno). Alliant is primarily a graduate university; about 95% of its enrolled students pursue masters and doctoral degrees. The school’s athletic nickname was the Gulls until it phased out its athletics program in 2007.
Alliant is the nation’s first university to be certified as a Public Benefit Corporation, or B Corporation. It’s a for-profit institution meant to balance purpose and profit. The university is made up of five colleges: the California School of Professional Psychology, the California School of Management & Leadership, the California School of Education, the California School of Forensic Studies, and San Francisco Law School. One of the school’s missions is to pair academic studies with hands-on training to prepare students for careers. Students participate in internships, consultations with professionals, and community service projects.
Notable faculty members from Alliant include Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl and psychologist Abraham Maslow, who created the theory of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Notable alumni include actor Jamie Foxx; retired actress and clinical psychologist Cheryl Arutt; and NFL players Sergio Albert, Dwight McDonald, and Wayne Clark.
