Question:

Let say if the patient has blood pressure issues and he is taking medications prior to the travel as well as after coming in to US. Doctors did not prohibit him from traveling. What if the patient experiences a very high spike in blood pressure and his vitals start getting abnormal and he needs ER visit? Will it be covered? Also, please note that when a patient is taking blood pressure medications, this does not mean, that he can have very frequent spikes in blood pressure but he is "potentially" at risk of having very high blood pressure spikes. So there is no guarantee that when the patient can have blood pressure spike. He might have it right after few days of buying insurance or he cannot have it at all. .So what is your policy on that about covering ER visits for such a patient?

Answer:

All the plans on the market are designed to cover the new illnesses and injuries that are contracted after the effective date of the policies. They will exclude the coverage for pre-existing conditions, preventative and routine care. With regard to your situation described, it would be determined at the time of service if such coverage would be available. The only way something such as this could be covered would be under an acute onset benefit. The claims department would review the attending physician notes and lab report from the time of service to determine if the situation would fall under the applicable coverage in the certificate wording of the plan.
