Expatriate Health Insurance

Question:

Citizen secure questions We are considering purchasing CitizenSecureSM International Major Medical Insurance but have a couple of questions. I am 49 and my husband is 52,. We are very active and live in Belize. My husband is British and I am Canadian. Basically, although we live in Belize, we do not actually reside here. Technically we do not reside anywhere and are perpetual tourists. We are self-employed and our business is offshore. We are wildlife photographers and work wherever we happen to be. One of my questions is about repatriation in the event of death. Where would we be repatriated to in this event? Would we be able to nominate a country, ie. Canada? My other question is about the sports coverage. Are any sports not covered if we get the optional sports rider and are their any limits on the activity allowed in any individual sport, ie. heights for skydiving? or depths for scuba diving? or, indeed any others?

Answer:

The repatriation benefit sends the body to the airport nearest the principal residence. If they have a place in mind where they would like the body to go I would suggest they list that as their principal residence. On a similar note, they have to select somewhere as principal residence and provide us with a mailing address. “Air or ground transportation of bodily remains or ashes to the airport or ground transportation terminal nearest to the Principal Residence of the deceased Member If they purchase the sports rider they do not have exclusions for sports with the exception of professional sports. If they do not purchase the rider the following exclusion is in place: “Injury sustained while taking part in the following activities: a. Amateur Athletics or professional sports or athletic activities, except this does not include Amateur sports or athletic activities which are non-contact and engaged in by the Member solely for leisure, recreational, entertainment or fitness purposes unless such sports or activities are otherwise excluded by this provision; and b. mountaineering where ropes or guides are normally used or at elevations of 4,500 meters or higher; and c. aviation (except when traveling solely as a passenger in a commercial aircraft); and d. hang gliding, sky diving, parachuting or bungee jumping; and e. snow skiing or snowboarding, except for recreational downhill and/or cross country snow skiing or snowboarding (no cover provided whilst skiing away from prepared and marked in-bound territories and/or against the advice of the local ski school or local authoritative body); and f. racing by any animal or motorized vehicle; and g. spelunking; and h. subaqua pursuits involving underwater breathing apparatus unless PADI/NAUI certified, accompanied by a certified instructor, and at depths of less than 10 meters; and i. jet skiing; and j. any other sport or athletic activity which is undertaken for thrill seeking and exposes the Member to abnormal or extraordinary risk of Injury.
