University of California Los Angeles International Student Insurance Requirements

UCLA states that all students including those holding an F/J visa are automatically enrolled in the University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) . UCLA does state students are able to waive this plan. However, the alternative plan must meet the qualifying factors stated in the waiver criteria. Some of these qualifiers are listed as followed:

  • Have no pre-existing condition exclusion or limitation; if the plan has a pre-existing condition waiting period, that period has expired.
  • Have no lifetime maximums on benefits.
  • Have no per-medical or per-mental health/substance use disorder condition maximum benefit limits.

F-2/J-2 student dependents: UCLA does not cite health insurance requirements for international student dependents. They are able to be enrolled in the school’s plan, however with no cited specification for accompanying dependent health insurance, F-2 student dependents can select any plan shown in the Student (F-1/F-2) section.

Those holding a J-2 visa can purchase from the listed plans below that meet the federal limits set by the Department of State, plus additional requirements as follows for Exchange Visitors or J visa holders:

  • Must include pre-existing condition coverage with a waiting period not exceeding 12 months. It is notated that acute onset of pre-existing conditions does not meet this requirement.

It is recommended to contact the UCLA DCISS to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.

UCLA states that all exchange visitors are required to have coverage for the entire duration of their stay. UCLA has three groups of exchange visitors, and each has their own requirements.

Exchange Visitors, such as Visiting Scholars or Visiting Student Researchers

J-1 holders and their dependents are required to enroll in the school’s plan or provide an alternative plan that meets the federal limits set by the Department of State, plus additional requirements as follows:

  • Must include pre-existing condition coverage with a waiting period not exceeding 12 months. It is notated that acute onset of pre-existing conditions does not meet this requirement.

Postdoctoral Scholars

J-1 holders and their dependents are required to enroll in the Postdoctoral Scholar Benefit plan with no mention of an option to waive this plan for an alternative plan.

UCLA Employee

J-1 holders who are UCLA employees are automatically enrolled in the UC Core plan. However, this plan does not meet the full requirement of federal limits, as it does not have emergency medical evacuation and repatriation coverage. UCLA states they are required to purchase a separate plan that meets the limits. The school has provided a recommended company, however it is not stated that it is required. Atlas MedEvac would be a good supplement.
