This week, the Vietnamese government announced a plan to propose an extension of their current e-Visa program to the National Assembly that would extend it from 30 days to three months. Reportedly, this change could happen as soon as May, 2023.

Currently, visitors from many countries, including the United States and Canada, must pay $25 to apply for an electronic visa in order to travel to Vietnam. While this process is relatively simple and quick, the e-Visa only allows visitors to remain in the country for 30 days, as opposed to 90 days in most countries around the region and the world. Furthermore, the process of extending the visa is not known to be especially convenient.

The limitations of the current visitor visa may be part of the reason why Vietnam, despite ending all COVID-19 restrictions in May, 2022, has not seen a rebound in tourist numbers to the level of its surrounding neighbors. It’s a popular country for activities like backpacking and hiking due to the many temples and historic sites. However, some of these trips can take longer than the allotted 30 days, leading to potential tourists looking elsewhere.

Though we will not know the exact details until the National Assembly votes on the issue this spring, many potential visitors are undoubtedly hoping that the Vietnam e-Visa is extended to three months as soon as possible to fit their summer travel plans.

Can Anyone Enter Vietnam Without a Visa?

Citizens of certain Asian and European countries are allowed visa-free travel to Vietnam. However, those who can forego getting a visa to enter Vietnam are limited to just 15 days in the country.

Is Travel Insurance Required for Vietnam?

Vietnam formerly did require insurance, but this requirement ended on May 15, 2022.

However, travel medical insurance remains strongly recommended for all visitors to Vietnam. Healthcare can be extremely expensive in the country, and you do not want an injury or an illness to potentially bankrupt you due to treatment costs. A travel medical insurance plan can allow you to receive the best available care without being solely responsible for the eligible costs. And with trips to Vietnam potentially being longer after the new law is passed, this could prove extremely valuable.

Americans traveling to Vietnam who are mostly concerned with protecting their prepaid trip costs should look into Vietnam travel insurance. If you need to cancel, interrupt, or delay your trip for a covered reason, your travel insurance plan can reimburse you for covered expenses, and even provide emergency medical coverage.

Does Vietnam Have any COVID-19 Restrictions?

Vietnam ended all COVID-related entry restrictions in May, 2022. Visitors no longer need to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test. The requirement to fill out a health declaration form also ended last year.

Currently, the only step to enter Vietnam for most international travelers is to apply for an electronic visa online. Though hopefully this application will soon allow the visitor to stay in the country for up to three times longer than the current 30 days.
