When you think of travel destinations in Asia, countries like Japan, China, India, and South Korea likely come to mind. Mongolia may not be very near the top of your list. But there are several reasons why you should move it up a notch or two.

This former satellite Soviet state has done much to try to attract tourists over the past 30 years, but it’s still considered well off the beaten path. However, Mongolia is an extremely easy country to visit, and there are some compelling reasons why you should consider it for your next Asian trip.

Why Visit Mongolia?

You May Not Need a Visa

Most westerners can travel to Mongolia visa-free for up to 30 days through the end of 2025. That includes residents of Australia, Canada, the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In fact, residents of the USA can visit Mongolia without a visa for up to 90 days.

This visa exemption is permanent for the US and Canada, but temporary for everyone else. If you’re from Europe and want to visit Mongolia, there’s no time like the present.

There are Few Entry Restrictions

Mongolia reopened its borders to international travel a year ago, and has since dropped all restrictions related to COVID-19. You won’t be asked to prove your vaccination status or take a COVID test.

It’s Paradise for Nature Lovers

The expansive Gobi Desert and numerous national parks make Mongolia a natural fit for those who crave the outdoors. You can enjoy hiking, camping, horseback riding, fishing, and even visiting with the nomadic families that call this country home (over 30% of the population is nomadic).

It’s Great for Foodies

Mongolia’s cuisine, which is heavily based on meat and dairy products, is unique and filling. You can enjoy local dishes like buuz and khorkog, and a wide variety of interesting choices in the capital of Ulaanbaatar. Just keep in mind that Mongolia might not be the best choice if you’re vegetarian.

Are There Any Downsides?

Flights Can Be Limited

Mongolia only has one international airport, located in Ulaanbaatar, and direct flights are few and far between. You’ll likely have to connect through a larger Asian hub before flying in. This can make air travel more expensive than some other locations in Asia.

It’s Only Affordable if You Rough It

Mongolia is far from the most expensive destination in Asia. In fact, meals and hotels can be quite cheap. However, if your idea of adventure involves a guided tour and catering, the costs can add up fast. In short, Mongolia is quite affordable if you’re backpacking and going it alone. But if you want Western-like conveniences, expect to pay a bit more than average.

It’s Very Remote

Mongolia is a massive country with a population of just over three million people. Many areas are extremely desolate, making resupply in rural locations a challenge. If you’re looking for a place with high-speed internet and cafes around every corner, you won’t find it in Mongolia outside of parts of Ulaanbaatar.

Travel Insurance for Mongolia

While Mongolia has no legal requirement for visitors to buy travel insurance, it is highly recommended for every visitor.

Due to the remote nature of Mongolia’s deserts and national parks, as well as the limited number of medical facilities in the country, emergency medical evacuation could be required for a serious injury or illness. The cost of this could very well exceed your life savings, so you won’t want to be stuck paying for it yourself. Make sure to get travel medical insurance with this coverage. It will come in handy if you require medical care while traveling abroad, as you’ll be able to get quality treatment for a price that won’t surprise you.

Since Mongolia takes several flights to get to, a cancelled trip could be especially costly. A trip cancellation insurance plan can see to it that you’re reimbursed for your eligible prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason, as well as many other benefits.

What Are You Waiting For?

Avoid the massive tourist crowds this summer and book your trip to somewhere truly unique. Mongolia is beautiful, welcoming, and unlike any other country on earth.
