The main University of Miami campus is a private research university located in Coral Gables. A group of citizens in Miami sanctioned the University of Miami in 1925 to promote inter-American studies through research in the creative arts and tropical studies.  

It began functioning from the fall of 1926 after the founder of Coral Gables, G.E. Merrick, made a generous contribution. 

UM Coral Gables had the infamous name of the “cardboard college” for many years because classes were held in a nearby hotel as the university recovered from damages caused by a hurricane. It took over two decades to rebuild the university.

University of Miami International Student and Exchange Visitor Insurance Requirements

University of Miami, Coral Gables requires all J-1 scholars and their dependents to meet the school limits of insurance coverage. These include the standard requirements set by the U.S. Department of State, plus a waiting period for pre-existing conditions that is reasonable as determined by industry standards. The plan may also require a co-insurance of up to 25%.

F-1 and J-1 international students are required to enroll in the university health insurance plan. However, they may waive enrollment in this plan if they purchase an alternate plan that meets the limits approved by the University Student Health Center. The university website does not mention health insurance requirements for accompanying F-2 dependents, but J-1 international students are required to purchase insurance for their J-2 dependents.
