General Information

University of the Cumberlands (UC), located in Williamsburg, Kentucky, was established in 1888. It was founded by a group of Baptist Ministers and Opened as the Williamsburg Institute. The school acquired Highland College in 1907 and was renamed Cumberland College in 1913. It became a junior college in 1918, but by the mid-1950s, officials worked to regain senior college status. The new class of four-year students graduated in 1961. Its first graduate degree was awarded in 1988. The school adopted its present name in 2005. Today, the school enrolls more than 11,000 students (the vast majority of them graduate students) and counting each year. The school colors are red, white, and blue, and its athletic nickname is the patriots.

Academic Offerings

UC offers undergraduate degrees, undergraduate certificates, master’s degrees, and doctoral degrees across its four colleges: Cumberland College (the undergraduate school), the Hutton School of Business / Management, the Hutton Center for Leadership Studies, and the Graduate / Professional Education Program. UC also operates a facility in Florence, Kentucky—the Northern Kentucky Campus—that houses the adult education program and the Ph.D. Program in Clinical Psychology.

On Campus

UC runs the Cumberland Inn and Conference Center, a hotel that mainly employs UC students. The inn is home to the Cumberland Inn Museum, featuring the Henkelmann Life Science Collection, the Carl Williams Cross Museum, and the University of the Cumberlands Archives. Another noteworthy building on campus is the Ward and Regina Correll Science Complex, which was built as a replica of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello mansion.

The school has been affiliated with the Baptist Church since its founding. The university has requested and received exemptions from the Title IX requirement that universities not discriminate based on factors like sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, and abortion.

Notable Alumni

Noteworthy University of the Cumberlands alumni include folk musician Jean Ritchie; Ergun Caner, former president of Liberty Theological Seminary; Betty L. Siegel, former president of Kennesaw State University; Christian musician Dick Tunney; former Kentucky Governor Bert T. Combs; and United States Postal Service Governor Mike Duncan.
