Suffolk University, located in Boston, Massachusetts, was established in 1906. It began as an evening law class taught by school founder Gleason Archer. It was named the Suffolk School of Law in 1907 and moved to Archer’s law office in downtown Boston. By 1930, it was one of the largest law schools in the country. The College of Arts and Sciences was founded in 1934 and the business school in 1936. That same year, the three schools were incorporated and became Suffolk University. The first campus residence halls began construction in the 1990s. Today, Suffolk University enrolls more than 7,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are blue and gold, and its athletic nickname is the rams.
Suffolk offers more than 60 areas of study across its undergraduate, graduate, and law programs. In addition to its three original schools, the university has since expanded to include an international campus in Madrid, Spain.
Suffolk is a private research university that has gained status as a Doctoral Research University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Some noteworthy research centers and institutes include the Suffolk University Political Research Center, the Institute on Law Practice Technology & Innovation, the Moakley Center for Public Management, the Poetry Center, and the Center for Restorative Justice.
The campus’s location in downtown Boston allows students a wide variety of cultural and recreational experiences. From the Museum of Fine Art to shopping at Downtown Crossing, from the restaurants of Chinatown to performances in the Theatre District—let alone professional opportunities at venues like the Financial District or the State House—there are countless enrichment opportunities within easy walking distance of campus.
Notable Suffolk University alumni include the founder’s son, Gleason Archer, Jr.; journalist and author James Bamford; CIA officer and security expert on The Manhattan Project William L. Uanna; Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Joan Vennochi; YouTube celebrity Jenna Mourey; and a wide variety of state and national judicial officials.
