Stephen F. Austin State University International Student Insurance

Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) was founded in 1923 in Nacogdoches, Texas. Nacogdoches lies in deep East Texas, about three hours southeast of the Dallas/Fort Worth area and about two hours northeast of Houston. SFA is one of a very small number of independent, public universities in Texas. The school’s colors are purple and white, and its athletic nicknames are the lumberjacks and ladyjacks.

Campus Traditions

The lumberjack was selected as the mascot in 1932 at a public assembly in which students and faculty proposed ideas and led the group in various accompanying yells and chants. Other demonstrations of campus spirit include the “Axe ‘em, Jacks!” hand sign and the axe handle that every SFA freshman receives to decorate and bang against the bleachers at football games. During the semester before graduation, students receive their class rings in a tradition called “The Big Dip.” Students receive their ring from the University president and then dip their hand into a vat of water from a campus fountain colored with purple dye.

Notable Alumni

Notable alumni of SFA include Joseph W. Kennedy, a co-discoverer of plutonium; musician Don Henley of the Eagles; filmmaker Shane Carruth; and Oscar- and Grammy-winning songwriter Will Jennings, who authored the lyrics to the movie Titanic’s “My Heart Will Go On.”
