International Student Health Insurance Requirements for San Francisco State University

F-1/J-1 International Students

San Francisco State University states that the Board of Trustees of California State University requires all degree-seeking F-1 students, such as those seeking a bachelor’s or master’s degree, are required to have health insurance as a condition of enrollment. For this reason, degree-seeking F-1 students must enroll in the university-sponsored student health insurance plan. However, students are able to waive this plan in lieu of comparable coverage through an employer-sponsor plan, and for those on a government-sponsored scholarship. SFSU does not state health insurance requirements for those on F-2 status. Therefore, they can select any plan in the Student (F-1/F-2) section of the website.

San Francisco State requires all J-1 international students to purchase the school’s health insurance plan, even if they have other insurance, for the full duration of the program. This coverage is as follows:

  • Standard limits plus $250,000 per accident or illness
  • Must be comprehensive
  • No capped benefits
  • Maximum deductible of $100 per condition
  • Covers preexisting conditions
  • Maximum out-of-pocket expenses of $2,500

San Francisco State does not mention requirements for J-2 student dependents. J-2 visa holders must select a plan that meets all minimum limits required by the Department of State. All plans under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section will meet the requirements mandated by the Department of State. It is recommended to contact the ISSO to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.
