Oklahoma State University International Student Insurance

Oklahoma State University (OSU), located in Stillwater, Oklahoma, was established in 1890. It opened its doors to students in 1891 as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College. On-campus housing began in 1910, and the Women’s Building—containing a dining hall, a women’s gymnasium, and housing for female students—opened that same year. In 1957, to reflect its broader curriculum, the school changed its name to Oklahoma State University of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. It quickly became known as Oklahoma State University for most purposes, and the shortened name was made official in 1980. Today, OSU enrolls almost 25,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are orange and black, and its athletic nicknames are the Cowboys and Cowgirls.

Academic and Research Opportunities

OSU offers more than 200 undergraduate majors, almost 80 master’s programs, and more than 40 doctoral programs across its seven academic colleges: the Ferguson College of Agriculture; the College of Arts and Sciences; the College of Education, Health and Aviation; the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology; the College of Human Sciences; the School of Global Studies and Partnerships; and the Spears School of Business. Additionally, it has a College of Veterinary Medicine and a College of Osteopathic Medicine. The university’s top programs include business, fashion, and its graduate program in accounting.

OSU has a strong research program and has been classified by the Carnegie Foundation as having the highest level of research activity. Noteworthy research centers and institutes on campus include the National Institute for Microbial Forensics and Food and Agriculture Biosecurity; the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers; the National Center for Veterinary Parasitology; the Institute for Free Enterprise & Entrepreneurship; and the Center for Integrative Research on Childhood Adversity (CIRCA). The university encourages research participation for undergraduates as early as their freshman year. The Freshman Research program gives students in any major the chance to work alongside faculty members.

On Campus

There are several points of interest on campus. One is the Student Union building, known as the largest and most comprehensive facility of its kind in the world. Another is the Boone Pickens Stadium, the center of the university’s renowned and celebrated football program. The OSU campus is also home to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum, dedicated to exhibits about amateur wrestling.

Notable Alumni

Notable Oklahoma State University alumni include country musician Garth Brooks; billionaire philanthropist T. Boone Pickens; actor James Marsden; Ed Roberts, the inventor of the first commercially viable personal computer; NASA astronaut Stuart Roosa; and authors Pamela Morsi and Ally Carter.
