Northern Michigan University International Student Insurance

General Information

The largest university in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Northern Michigan University, located in Marquette, Michigan, came into being in 1899. Six faculty members taught 32 students in the first enrolled class. Today, there are more than 7,500 students on the 360-acre university campus. More than 75% of the 300-strong faculty team members are Ph. D. holders. The university insists on having full-time faculty for its students.

The Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, among other regulatory bodies, has accredited the university. The university promotes a multicultural atmosphere where education transforms students into the leaders of tomorrow.

The campus has a large number of facilities that support the students in their learning endeavors. Besides award-winning labs, a theater, and a dedicated technology and sciences building, the campus also plays home to the world’s largest wooden dome – the Superior Dome.

Northern Michigan University Academic and Research Opportunities

The university offers a wide range of programs. It has more than 170 programs for undergraduate students and 30+ programs (both campus-based and online) at the graduate level. NMU has the following five academic divisions:

  • College of Academic Information Services
  • College of Arts and Sciences
  • Walker L. Cisler College of Business
  • Graduate Education and Research
  • College of Health Sciences and Professional Studies

The Dean of Students’ office on campus is happy to provide any and all assistance to students that it can in every matter.

Health Risks for Northern Michigan University International Students

The SafeWise report in 2017 marked Marquette as one of the safest college towns in the U.S. While international students will almost certainly be safe on campus, they need to keep certain points in mind while off campus and around town.

The magnificent Lake Superior is in close vicinity. You will surely visit it multiple times and might also go for a swim. Adopt the necessary precautions if you do so. Follow the safety instructions, and swim only in areas marked safe for swimming or where lifeguards are present.

Michigan’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average. However, not every location is unsafe. Marquette is a peaceful place to live and study, so don’t let the statistics bother you too much. If you plan to venture out too far from campus or go for a long drive on a weekend, go in a group. Stay away from deserted areas, and try to return to campus before sunset.
