The Phoenix Biomedical Campus, located in Phoenix, Arizona, is a medical and bioscience campus that is a partnership between Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona. It was established in 2010 to help meet a projected shortage of health care professionals in the region, and it opened its doors to students in 2012. The 30-acre campus in downtown Phoenix contains research, academic, and clinical facilities.
NAU offers four degrees and counting on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus: a Master of Science in Athletic Training program, a Master of Physician Assistant Studies program, a Doctor of Occupational Therapy program, and a Doctor of Physical Therapy program. The campus also partners with health care and research facilities that help students conduct research and their clinical rotations during school. These partners include the Mayo Clinic, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, the Translational Genomics Research Institute, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders, and more.
The main campus of Northern Arizona University (NAU), located in Flagstaff, Arizona, was established in 1899. It opened as the Northern Arizona Normal School, a teacher training institution, and its first graduating class consisted of four women. The school gained the right to grant bachelor’s degrees (in education) in 1925. Enrollment increased during the Great Depression but plummeted during WWII. During the post-war boom, the school expanded its education offerings beyond education into the arts and sciences. The school became Arizona State College at Flagstaff in 1945 and, by 1966, it had gained university status and adopted its present name. Its colors are blue and gold, and its athletic nickname is the lumberjacks.
