Named after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and St. Martin de Porres, Martin University is an independent institution that was founded in 1977. But initially, it grew from the Martin Center, a non-profit human services agency.
It shifted its campus in 1987 to Avondale Palace in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood of Indianapolis, Indiana. Martin University had a former church, and the school grew from there.
Martin University is the only predominately African American institution of higher education in Indiana.
In the summer of 2001, the university grew further with the addition of a revamped Education Center and a Peace Garden. The Education Center has several classrooms as well as other structures that continue to provide exceptional learning opportunities.
Although the only predominantly Black institution in Indiana, its name is absent from the HBCU. This happened due to Martin University coming into being after the cut-off date of 1964.
It is a four-year private university that boasts a high acceptance rate and an all-inclusive learning curve.
The programs here are urban-centric, and the class sizes are small so students can receive personalized attention.
The university's goal is to provide a career-oriented education. It offers 14 undergraduate degrees and two master’s degrees programs.
While most of the undergraduate degrees are popular, there are two master's degrees: a Master of Arts in Urban Ministries, and a Master of Science in Community Psychology. This latter program helps prepare students to get a state license as a mental health counselor.
These prepare students for professional fields in life. The fees are more affordable than many other four-year universities, but financial aid is available. About 90% of Martin University students receive some sort of financial aid.
As a student moving in from a foreign country, what should you expect to find in Indianapolis?
The weather in the state of Indiana fluctuates between soaring temperatures in the summer and chilly winters. Keep this in mind while packing your clothes and supplies.
For recreation and leisure, hit the state’s many biking trails that weave through nature reserves and forests. Or you could try ziplining, bungee-jumping, and open-water swimming in the lakes near Indianapolis. There are plenty of chances for you to fulfill your thirst for adventure here.
Remember to make your plans well in advance, and keep an eye on the weather. Snowstorms are common in the winter. Also ensure that when you venture out in the woods or on the lake, you always have adequate safety gear and protective equipment.
If you are careful enough, Indianapolis should not pose a problem for travelling or living. However, given the unpredictability of medical emergencies and the expense of treatment, it's best to safeguard yourself beforehand.
All international students in the U.S. are required by the U.S. Department of State to have adequate health insurance coverage. The university will ask for proof of your health insurance as part of your enrollment. Be sure to purchase a plan as soon as possible if you still wish to travel abroad for higher education.
Insurance is not your bulletproof vest for warding off injuries or health problems. But, in case problems do arise, your health insurance can take the bullet by paying your medical bills without hassles.
You are legally required to have health insurance coverage before joining MU. Begin looking for health insurance coverage plans if you don't have one yet.
Living in a country with notoriously high medical treatment costs is a sound reason to get insurance.
Look at the requirements set by Martin University. Search for plans that meet the minimum requirements, and pick the insurance that stands out to you.
