Loyola University New Orleans International Student Insurance Requirements

International Students 

International students holding an F-1 or J-1 visa are required to have health insurance while attending Loyola University New Orleans. All students will be automatically enrolled in and billed for the school-sponsored plan, which is cited to be specifically designed to meet the needs of international students. 

This plan can be waived by the students if they are able to meet the following requirements: 

  • Your parent/spouse is employed by a United States-based company that provides Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant coverage that you are covered under.
  • You arrived in the United States with health insurance because you participate in a government exchange student program, such as SACM.
  • You are currently covered by one of your parent’s insurance plans from your home country. This plan must meet or exceed the school-sponsored plan and be valid in the United States. An emergency-only and/or travel plan will not be accepted.

At this time there are no plans available to offer that will provide these limits of coverage. 

As for the health insurance coverage for dependents, Loyola University New Orleans does not cite any specification for required coverage. Therefore, F-2 student dependents can select any plan shown in the Student (F-1/F-2) section. J-2 dependents may not have mandates from the school, however, the Department of State does state that they are required to obtain and maintain a policy that meets federal limits for the duration of their stay in the U.S. All plans shown in the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section meet these requirements.  

It is recommended to contact the Center for International Education Office of Academic Affairs to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.

Exchange Visitors 

Loyola University New Orleans states that those participating in the J-1 Exchange Visitor program (Professor or Research Scholar) are required obtain and maintain health insurance for the full duration of their stay, as per the federal mandates issued by the Department of State, for themselves and their accompanying dependents. 

All plans under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section will meet the requirements mandated by the Department of State.
