Bloomington is safer than 11% of all US cities, as far as crime is concerned. As an international student, you need not be worried about the stats, though. Just do your best to observe basic safety protocols, like staying away from desolate areas of the city, especially if you are alone.

Winters are quite cold in Indiana. Snowstorms can be intense, so be aware of weather forecasts. Road accidents are another risk to keep in mind. Even if you do not plan to drive while attending IU, be especially careful when crossing streets.

Also, take precautions against air pollution in this industrialized state. It’s best to wear a mask in populated areas if you have respiratory issues. While out in the countryside, watch out for rattlesnakes and black widow spiders.

International Student Health Insurance for Indiana University – FAQs

Do international students need health insurance before joining Indiana University?

IU requires all international students and their dependents to enroll in and pay for the university’s health insurance plan unless they qualify for an exemption. These exemptions are detailed in the Insurance Requirements section below.

What’s the need for Indiana University health insurance for international students?

Accidents and illnesses are unpredictable. What is predictable is the financial damage they can cause due to the price of medical treatment in the United States. You simply cannot afford to not have insurance coverage.

How to find the best student health insurance for Indiana University?

Unless you qualify for one of the exemptions outlined below, you will be enrolled in and billed for the IU student health insurance plan.

However, if you are exempt or would like to purchase supplementary coverage for yourself or your dependents, do your due diligence and compare several plans before making a purchase. The right insurance plan for you will depend on your individual needs, your budget, and the level of coverage you are comfortable with.

Indiana University International Student Insurance Requirements

International Students

Indiana University (IU) requires that all international students both with F and J visas have health insurance for themselves, as well as their dependents. Each student is automatically enrolled in the school health insurance plan with no option to waive, unless they qualify for the exemption.

Automatic exemption criteria include:

  • Graduate students with Assistantships or Fellowships who are enrolled in a different IU health insurance plan
  • Sponsored students whose sponsoring organization provides approved health insurance as stated in their financial guarantee or contract

Exemption requests

  • J-1 students in an official exchange program whose sending organization either provides health insurance or funding to purchase health insurance that meets J-1 requirements are also eligible to waive the plan.
  • J-1 International students who are able to waive for this reason can choose to purchase a plan that meets the federal limits set forth by the U.S department of State, as well as the additional requirement which includes coverage for maternity and pregnancy care. These plans can be located below, or under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section of the website.
  • Students enrolled in a health insurance plan provided by their spouses or parent's U.S.-based employer
  • Students working on CPT or OPT who receive health insurance through their U.S.-based employer
  • Students completing coursework outside of the U.S. due to COVID-19
It is recommended to contact the Office of International Service to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.

Exchange Visitors

Indiana University (IU) requires all Scholars to have health insurance for themselves as well as their dependents. It is noted that Visiting Scholars who are either employed or short–term are required to maintain health coverage. For this reason, IU provides a health plan for the Visiting Scholar as well as their dependents, and for those who receive employee-paid benefits.

Visiting Scholars and all other Nonemployees

IU states that Visiting Scholars who are not eligible for employee benefits are required to be enrolled in the International Students Insurance plan, unless they choose to waive out of the plan for one that meets waiver requirements. J-1 Visitors and their dependents are able to waive for a plan that meets the federal limits set forth by the U.S department of State as well as the additional requirement which includes coverage for maternity and pregnancy care. These plans can be located below or under the Exchange Visitor (J1/J2) section of the website.

IU J Visa Employees

IU states that J-1 visa holders who are considered to be full-time employees are eligible for IU medical benefits. This plan is available to dependents as well at an additional cost. IU notes that this plan meets the minimum level of coverage required by the U.S Department of State.
