Fuller Theological Seminary, located in Pasadena, California, was established in 1947. It was founded by radio evangelist Charles E. Fuller and pastor Harold John Ockenga, who envisioned the school as a “center for evangelical scholarship” and a way to reform, renew, and broaden Christian fundamentalism in the U.S. The first few years of classes were held in the kindergarten Sunday school rooms at a local church until it moved to its current campus in 1953. Today, Fuller enrolls more than 3,500 students and counting each year.
Fuller offers 16 degree programs across three schools: the School of Theology, the School of Psychology, and the School of Intercultural Studies. Many students from the School of Theology move on to careers as pastors, teachers, or lay ministers all over the world. Several of its master’s degrees (among them Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Theology) are offered entirely in Korean and Spanish. It also operates two regional campuses in Phoenix, Arizona, and Houston, Texas.
The campus is also home to numerous research centers, institutes, and initiatives that work to adapt church teachings to the modern world. These include the Center for Asian-American Theology and Ministry; the Fuller Institute for Recovery Ministry; the William E. Pannell Center for African-American Church Studies; and the Travis Research Institute, which focuses on topics like biopsychosocial research, the study of stress and trauma, and psychotherapy and religion.
Notable faculty at Fuller Theological Seminary includes Everett Harrison, Carl F. H. Henry, Harold Lindsell, Wilbur Smith, and Neil Clark Warren, founder of eHarmony.com. Notable alumni include filmmaker Craig Detweiler, pastor Rick Warren, Christian author and speaker John C. Maxwell, and motivational speaker Les Parrott III.
