The first batch of students walked into Edison Junior College in 1962. In 2014, the college was rechristened as Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW). The Fort Myers campus is the main campus of the college. It has satellite campuses in several other locations, including the Hendry/Glades Curtis Center in LaBelle, Florida.
The Hendry/Glades Curtis Center in LaBelle lies about an hour northeast of the main campus in Fort Meyers. Its facilities include four computer labs, seven general classrooms, a Math and Writing Center, a computer lab, full-service library, student life office, study rooms, a student lounge, and a video-conferencing instructional room. The center was established to provide educational opportunities to students outside the immediate Fort Meyers area.
Florida SouthWestern State College aims to encourage education amidst a diverse and multicultural environment. That will prepare the students to be responsible and proactive participants of the new global society. It seeks to expand education among all the deserving sectors and provide a world-class education based on continuous innovation and research.
In the 2019-20 academic year, the total student population stood at approximately 22,000. The total faculty strength is more than 670. The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has accredited FSW to award associate and baccalaureate degrees.
The college provides financial aid to deserving students. It also has a variety of scholarship programs.
The college offers more than 45 academic programs across the following five academic divisions:
Every year, more than 3,500 dual-enrollments take place in the college. FSW also has a range of noncredit programs like continuing education, certification, professional development, and corporate training.
LaBelle lies along the scenic Caloosahatchee River. Move around to get a feel for the rich heritage of Florida. LaBelle Nature Park is a perfect place for a relaxing walk. Weekend drives to Fort Myers and West Palm Beach should be on your “to-do” list, as well.
Enjoy the sights and sounds, but stay alert against possible risks. LaBelle has a higher-than-average crime rate as compared to other Florida cities. Avoid staying out at night, even more so if you are alone. Watch out for pickpockets in crowded areas.
When hiking or trekking, keep your eyes and ears open for hurricane warnings, as Florida is a high-risk hurricane zone. Also, watch out for hostile wildlife: attacks from gators, venomous snakes, wild boars, and black bears are not uncommon.
