Colorado State University (CSU), located in Fort Collins, Colorado, was established in 1870. It was founded as the Agricultural College of Colorado and opened its doors to students in 1879. As the school’s popularity grew, it changed its name to reflect its increasing academic diversity. It became the Colorado State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (Colorado A&M) in 1935 and Colorado State University in 1957. Today, CSU enrolls more than 30,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are green, gold, and white, and its athletic nickname is the rams.

CSU offers about 40 degrees at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels in its colleges of Agricultural Sciences, Applied Human Sciences, Business, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Natural Resources, Natural Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. From the beginning, however, one of its central focuses has been on agriculture and forestry.

Other CSU Campus Locations

CSU has two locations in Fort Collins beyond its main campus. The James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital was built in 1979 and houses 28 specialties related to animal healthcare. The Foothills Campus, located in the northwest part of the city, houses the department of atmospheric sciences and multiple research and outreach centers. These include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Engineering Research Center, the B.W Pickett Equine Center, and the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere. 

Life On Campus for International Students

Other notable research institutes on campus include the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute, the Center for Earth-Atmosphere Studies, the Western Forest Fire Research Center, and the Equine Teaching and Research Center.

The CSU campus is also home to several museums. The Gregory Allicar Museum of Art displays about 3,500 works of art across more than 10,000 square feet of gallery space. Its permanent collections include the Hartford-Tandstad Collection, whose works date from the late Renaissance period through the 1800s, and the African Gallery, which hosts everything from ceramics to carved wood to metal work from 50 countries and thousands of cultures.

Notable Alumni

Noteworthy Colorado State University alumni include comedian Leslie Jones; actors Keith Carradine and John Amos; iPod co-creator Jon Rubinstein; musician Isaac Slade of The Fray; astronauts Mary Cleave, Martin Fettman, and James Van Hoften; and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa.
