International Student Insurance Requirements for California State University, Northridge

All new F-1/J-1 international students are required to obtain health insurance for the full duration of their student status as mandated by the California State University Chancellor’s Office. For this reason, CSUN international students are required to purchase the school’s health insurance plan. According to CSUN, once you have purchased insurance, proof of that insurance will automatically be sent to IESC. In order to waive this insurance, alternate insurance must meet certain requirements such as:

  • For government-sponsored students: Must be comparable and provide proof of insurance. Your financial guarantee/insurance must be valid for the entire registered semester.
  • Or, health insurance must be USA employer-based and comparable to the plan offered by CSUN.

CSUN doesn’t mandate health insurance for dependents of F-1/J-1 status students. However, due to the high cost of medical expenses, they highly recommend purchasing health insurance for their F-2/J-2 status dependents for the duration of their time in the U.S. F-2 dependents may purchase any plan under the Student (F-1/F-2) section. J-2 visa holders must purchase a plan that meets minimum Department of State requirements. They can locate available plans under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section that meet all health insurance requirements to maintain the J visa. It is recommended to always confirm with the IESC advisor prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.

J-1/J-2 exchange visitors and scholars: CSUN requires those who are J-1 exchange visitors (foreign professors, research scholars, student interns and short-term) as well as their dependents to obtain and maintain insurance for the entirety of their stay that satisfies government regulations and standard requirements of the Department of State. J-1 visa holders should ensure that their J-2 status dependents have insurance coverage for medical, evacuation, and repatriation benefits just like the J-1 status visa holder. All visitors are required to be insured at all times throughout their visit. It is recommended to always confirm with the Faculty Affairs office prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.
