Babson College, located in Wellesley, Massachusetts, was established in 1919 as a private, all-male business institute. The school has grown from an inaugural class of 27 taught in its founder’s home to an enrollment of more than 3,000 and counting and national acclaim. Originally called the Babson Institute, the school environment was at first modeled after a work environment: Students wore professional attire, worked from 8:30-5 Monday through Friday, were assigned an office desk with a telephone and typewriter, and professional secretaries typed their assignments and correspondences.
In 1969, it began offering four-year degrees and was renamed Babson College. It also began to admit women. The school’s colors are green and white, and its athletic nickname is the beavers.
Some of Babson’s distinguishing characteristics include its undergraduate program, which features business and literal arts programs offering a blend of innovative, integrated, and applied learning experiences; the F.W. Olin Graduate School, whose MBA program has been ranked #1 in Entrepreneurship for 26 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report; global research projects; and three satellite campuses in Boston, Miami, and San Francisco.
The campus is also home to the Babson Globe, a 25-ton, 28-foot-diameter rotating globe that was at one time the largest rotating globe in the world. Following a period of decay, it was refurbished in 1994 following a fundraiser led by students, faculty, and alumni.
Notable Babson alumni include Arthur Blank, co-founder of Home Depot; Alberto Perlman, co-founder of Zumba Fitness; Akio Toyoda, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation; Terrell Braly, co-founder of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema franchise and founder of Quizno’s; and William Chapin, president of the Automotive Hall of Fame.
