What is covered and not covered?
The insurance company will generally pay for new medical conditions, injuries, or accidents that may occur after the effective date of the policy.
Safe Travels Complete covers stable pre-existing conditions up to $25,000, $30,000, $40,000, or $50,000 for ages below 70, and $20,000 for ages 70-89.
Coverage for stabilized pre-existing conditions has its own deductible and maximum benefit amount, separate from the plan's standard coverage. When a claim for a stabilized pre-existing condition is submitted, it will be evaluated under these specific limits and deductible. The plan's overall policy maximum will still continue to apply.
Prescription drugs are covered up to $50 each, up to $500 total. There is a 90-day limit per prescription. More information.
Dental is covered only up to $250 for acute pain to sound and natural teeth. For any practical dental coverage, consider a low cost plan from Careington that provides excellent coverage.
Safe Travels Complete will provide coverage for persons traveling to the United States, if coverage is purchased before travel.
How do I use the insurance?
Please look at the detailed description.
How much is covered?
First, you will have to pay your annual deductible (varies from $250 to $5,000) before the insurance company starts paying anything for the covered expenses, except for Urgent Care or Walk In Clinic visits which are subject to a copay instead. You will need to continue to pay all the money yourself until you have completely satisfied the deductible. The deductible is not just for hospitalization.
After the deductible (or copay) is satisfied, the plan pays 80% (60% outside the network) of the covered expenses up to the policy maximum ranging from $60,000 to $1,000,000.
How much is covered for stable Pre-Existing Conditions?
First, you will have to pay your pre-existing condition deductible (varies from $1,500 to $10,000).
After the deductible is satisfied, the plan pays 80% (60% outside the network) of the covered expenses up to the pre-existing condition policy maximum ranging from $20,000 to $50,000.
Example:
Let's assume that you have purchased a $60,000 policy maximum with a $250 deductible for 3 months and selected a pre-existing condition maximum of $30,000 with a $2,000 deductible.
Let's assume that the doctor charges you $150/visit, and you need to visit several times for a new injury or illness.
The first time you visit the doctor in-network, you will have to pay all of that $150 yourself. You still have $100 left towards the unsatisfied deductible
When you visit the doctor next time, and he charges you $150, you will have to pay $100 yourself. You have now completely satisfied your annual deductible. Out of the remaining $50 after your deductible, the plan pays 80% which is $40 and you pay 20% which is $10.
For any subsequent treatment (whether for the same condition or a different condition), you don't have to pay the deductible again for a new injury or illness.
After that, the insurance company will pay 80% for covered medical expenses, up to $60,000. If you incur any expenses beyond $60,000, you will be responsible for paying that amount.
Let's assume that you were treated for a stabilized pre-existing condition episode and are hospitalized for 3 days. The hospital charges $12,000 per day for a total bill of $36,000. Assuming this is the first instance of your needing to use the insurance for pre-existing conditions, you pay the $2,000 deductible, then the insurance would pay 80% which is $27,200 after which you would pay 20% of the remaining amount which is $6,800.
The amount the insurance would pay for pre-existing conditions would be capped at $30,000 even though the overall policy maximum is $60,000, the amount used for pre-existing conditions would reduce your overall amount of insurance.
Even if you extend your insurance after the initial 3 months, you don't have to pay the deductible again.
