Those traveling across France this summer may have to adjust their plans once arriving in the country. The popular European destination has officially banned short-haul domestic flights that can be served by train in 2.5 hours or less. The move is said to be part of a 2021 climate law aimed at reducing aircraft emissions.

While this law has technically been in effect for a couple of years now, the European Commission was previously investigating its legality at the request of several airlines.

The law means that it may no longer be possible to catch a flight from Paris to a location like Bordeaux or Lyon for a day trip. You can still make the journey; you’ll just have to make it by train now.

It should be noted that this ban will only apply to destinations with timely and frequent train service. If your destination does not receive regular rail service in the country, you should still be able to fly as normal.

France’s biggest air carrier, Air France, has already been complying with this ban as part of a deal struck with the French government for coronavirus support in 2020. Now, competing airlines will be lawfully banned from providing service to applicable locations as well.

Those planning a trip to France that involves traveling to different regions of the country will need to keep this new restriction in mind. It could impact your travel time between destinations, requiring adjustments to your itinerary.

Enjoy Less Stress with France Travel Insurance

If your trip must be cancelled, interrupted, or delayed for a covered reason, you’ll be glad to have France travel insurance. If your trip runs into an unexpected situation that costs you extra money, your travel insurance coverage can reimburse you for eligible expenses. It can also provide emergency medical care coverage.

If you’re worried about paying for treatment in case you become sick or get injured while traveling abroad, look into travel medical insurance. Healthcare outside your home country can be extremely expensive, as your domestic health insurance is unlikely to be accepted. A travel medical insurance plan allows you to access the best available care for a more affordable price, and can even cover necessary emergency medical evacuation.
