With summer break coming up in just a few short months for students in the USA, many are making plans for what they’ll do during their well-deserved time off.

While many domestic students choose to travel home from their college or university during the summer, this isn’t always possible for international students on F1 visas. The cost of flying back home for summer break may be too high, the student may decide to enroll in summer classes to get ahead in their academic program, or they may elect to continue working at a school facility during summer break to earn extra money. In any case, it’s imperative to make sure that you have health insurance coverage year-round.

Does International Student Health Insurance Coverage Include Summer Break?

If you are paying for school-sponsored insurance coverage, the answer depends entirely on the college or university you’re attending. Many schools stop their insurance coverage during the summer months, as most students leave campus during that time, and many domestic students can be covered by their parents’ health insurance during the summer.

But study abroad students remaining in the US during summer break do not have that option. As their family lives in another country, they need to make sure they do not risk going without coverage.

However, if you have purchased international student insurance independently, you can choose to have year-round coverage for the duration of your program.

How Do I Find Out If My School Offers Summer Insurance Coverage?

The first step would be to contact your school’s international student and scholar office, or ISSO. Depending upon the school, this office may be referred to by a different name. They will be able to tell you if your school’s insurance includes summer coverage, and all relevant details.

If your school does optionally offer summer coverage, you can elect to pay for it, or they may allow you to purchase your own international student insurance for the summer. It will be up to you to compare the available plans and decide which is best for you. However, make sure that the coverage from the school is available before you decide to stick with it. Some colleges and universities only offer summer health coverage to domestic students.

If your school does not offer summer insurance coverage, search the school directory for your college or university to shop plans, and contact us if you have any questions.

Why Do I Need Student Insurance For the Summer?

Accidents and illnesses don’t take the summer months off. In fact, you may be at even greater risk due to the different outdoor activities you decide to take part in during warm weather. The last thing you want is to threaten your education in the US by getting stuck with a medical bill you can’t afford to pay.

Instead, shop international student insurance plans today. With coverage in place, you’ll be able to enjoy peace of mind during your summer break, whether it’s work or play.
