Xavier University of Louisiana International Student Insurance

General Information

Katharine Drexel made use of her father’s inheritance to further the cause of education for African American students. Supported by the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, she set up the Xavier University Preparatory School in 1915. Founded on the pillars of justice, equality, and service to humanity, the institute continued to grow and became a university in 1932.

A Historically Black College (HBC), Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) hasn’t kept its doors closed to the students of other races and creeds. Almost 25% of the students are not African American. Students from over 16 countries pursue their higher education at XULA, acquiring academic knowledge and interpersonal skills to assume leadership roles in the world.

Xavier University of Louisiana Academic and Research Opportunities

The pursuit of excellence is a way of life for students at XULA. Supported by experienced and dedicated faculty members, students at Xavier are exposed to a world of experiential learning and global research opportunities.

There are two colleges at XULA – the College of Arts & Sciences, and the College of Pharmacy.

Let’s take a look at a few programs on offer at XULA:

  • Education & Counseling
  • Social & Behavioral Sciences
  • Fine Arts & Humanities
  • Business
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences

Students can also pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy program at XULA. Through its partnerships with several engineering colleges, XULA offers its students a chance to opt for a dual-degree engineering program, as well.

Health Risks for Xavier University of Louisiana International Students

New Orleans is an internationally recognized tourist destination in the southeastern United States, known for its French-influenced Creole culture, jazz music, and famous parties. Although an inviting location for international students, be sure to keep these health risks in mind:

New Orleans’ location on the Gulf of Mexico means it faces regular threats from tropical storms and hurricanes. Due to its low-lying topography, even weak storms can cause flooding and power outages. However, the city has done much to improve its infrastructure following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

It’s only natural for students at Xavier to want to explore famous New Orleans nightlife, but be careful when doing so. Tourist hotspots like Bourbon Street and the French Quarter can be rife with pickpockets and rowdy crowds. Use your best judgement at all times, and remember that the legal drinking age in the U.S. is 21.

Finally, remember that New Orleans is quite hot and humid most of the year. In the spring, summer, and early fall, temperatures regularly reach 90°F (32°C), with high humidity, making it feel even warmer. Be mindful of signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration, especially if you are from a cooler or drier region.

Cover Your Risks with Health Insurance for Xavier University of Louisiana

Health insurance for students studying in the U.S. is imperative. American healthcare is extremely expensive, and insurance is your only line of defense against medical bills that could otherwise bankrupt you.

What’s the need for the Xavier University of Louisiana health insurance for international students?

If you are from a country that has socialized healthcare, or at least affordable healthcare, the price of medical treatment in the U.S. may come as a rude shock to you. Without insurance, a doctor’s visit can cost hundreds of dollars and sometimes, thousands of dollars. Hospital treatment can cost tens, if not hundreds of thousands.

Since you likely do not have it in your budget to afford this, international student health insurance is essential financial protection.

How to find the best student health insurance for the Xavier University of Louisiana?

Go through the insurance requirements below. If you are eligible for the university’s health plan, research it thoroughly to make sure it provides sufficient coverage. You may want to buy supplemental insurance for yourself or your dependents, depending on your particular needs.

If you are purchasing insurance coverage, take the time to read the fine print of each plan you’re considering. The differences in costs are related to differences in coverage. Compare multiple plans before deciding on the best fit for you.

Xavier University of Louisiana International Student Insurance Requirements

International Students

Xavier University of Louisiana understands that good health is essential to achieving educational goals, which is why student health Insurance is mandatory for all undergraduate students. Eligibility must be maintained in order to continue coverage with the university health insurance plan. Given that this is mandated, each student is automatically enrolled into the plan with an option to waive for a plan that meets the specified limits.

Students are able to enroll their dependents into the university health insurance plan for an additional fee, or get them an alternate plan, as they give no mandates of coverage. Dependents of international students can select any plan within the Student (F-1/F-2) section

It is recommended to contact the Office of Student Health Service to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.

Exchange Visitors

Xavier University of Louisiana only states that International scholars on a J1 visa are subject to the Exchange Visitor Program regulations. Department of State regulations state that J visa holders must purchase health insurance that meets the federal standards for the full duration of their time in the U.S. All plans under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section will meet the requirements mandated by the Department of State. It is also mentioned that the plan’s coverage should include additional requirements as listed below:

  • May require a waiting period for pre-existing conditions which is reasonable as determined by current industry standards
  • May include provision for co-insurance under the terms of which the exchange visitor may be required to pay up to 25% of the covered benefits per accident or illness

Xavier University of Louisiana does not mention specific requirements for dependents of J-1 scholars and those on an Exchange Visitor Program. However, the U.S. Department of State does require them to maintain coverage meeting the federal limits for the duration of their stay. All plans under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section will meet the requirements mandated by the Department of State.

It is recommended to contact the Office of Student Health Service to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.
