Do international students need health insurance before joining the University of Cincinnati?

International students at UC must have the University of Cincinnati - Cincinnati, OH international student health insurance plan. What’s the need for University of Cincinnati health insurance for international students?

If you are able to choose an outside provider, go through the various options provided by them on this website. Thereafter, select the plan that best suits your requirements. If not, you will be automatically enrolled in the university-sponsored plan. 

University of Cincinnati International Student Insurance Requirements

International Students 

The University of Cincinnati states that all international students registered for at least six credit hours are automatically enrolled in the University Sponsored Plan (SHIP). Some students who meet the qualifications are able to waive the SHIP for one that is comparable: 

  • Coverage does not contain a preexisting condition waiting period, or the waiting period has expired.
  • Coverage is not a limited benefits or short-term plan
  • Insurance is through a U.S.-based insurance company, employing a U.S.-based claims administrator.

The University of Cincinnati allow dependents of international students to be enrolled at an additional cost. However, this is not mandated. Therefore, F-2 student dependents can select any plan shown in the Student (F-1/F-2) section. J-2 dependents may not have mandates from the school; however, the Department of State does state they are required to obtain and maintain the federal limits for the duration of their stay in the U.S. The plans shown in the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section do meet the requirements.  

It is recommended to contact the UC International Services office to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee. 

Exchange Visitors 

The University of Cincinnati requires all J-1 Exchange Visitors, including J-1 interns and their dependents to have a health insurance plan that meets the standards set by the Department of State for the full duration of their time in the U.S. These plans can be located below, or in the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section of the website, as these will meet the requirements mandated by the Department of State.

UC Employees 

University of Cincinnati states that J-1 Exchange Visitors who will be employees and are covered under the UC benefit plan are already in compliance. For those who are waiting for the UC benefits plan to start, upon arrival date they are able to purchase any plan under the Exchange Visitor (J-1/J-2) section.  

It is recommended to contact the UC International Services office to verify the health insurance requirements prior to purchase, as detailed information may only be provided to the attendee.
