Q:My parents are visiting United States currently and they planned to stay for 3 months. My mother has pre-existing condition and she needs the daily medication and she brought enough supply with her for 3 months. However, due to COVID-19 situation, they are stuck in the US and are unable to go back to India. She is running out of her medicines. I already have purchased the visitors insurance for them when came here. Can I get the additional medication for her? Would the visitors insurance cover it? If not, can I buy another visitors insurance that would cover them?

A:
Unfortunately, routine maintenance of pre-existing conditions is not covered in any of the visitors insurance plans. They are meant to generally cover any new medical conditions, injuries or accidents that may occur after the effective date of the policy. Some of the plans cover acute onset of pre-existing conditions which is an unexpected emergency occurring all of sudden without any prior warnings or symptoms and you need to take the treatment within the next 24 hours. You would have to take an appointment with a physician in the US and he/she would need to prescribe the medicine that your mother needs. You would need to pay both for the physician visit and the prescription medicine out of your pocket. Visitors insurance plans were not designed to cover them. Some of the visitors insurance plans come with the prescription discount card. You could use that to get some discount and that is the most it can help with. We completely understand that it is totally unexpected global crisis and your parents are stuck in the US against their will because there are no flights to go back. However, visitors insurance would not provide additional coverage that it does not have to begin with.

Q:My parents have diabetes bp.They are not able to travel to India due to this current situation so they need medicine for above conditions. Can you suggest particular plan which cover these conditions

A:
Unfortunately, there are no plans that will cover the cost of pre-existing conditions, routine doctor's visits or items such as medications that are considered routine. This would be an out of pocket expense. The available plans in the Visitor to the USA section are designed to cover the new accident and new illnesses that happen after the effective date of the policy or an acute onset of a pre-existing condition.
