General Information

Youngstown State University (YSU), located in Youngstown, Ohio, was established in 1908. It began as a single commercial law night course offered by the Youngstown YMCA. In 1916, the YMCA courses were incorporated into the Youngstown Association School, and in 1921, the Association School was renamed the Youngstown Institute of Technology. In 1931, it was renamed Youngstown College. It became Youngstown University in 1955 and, upon joining the University System of Ohio in 1967, adopted its current name. Today, YSU enrolls almost 13,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are cardinal and white, and its athletic nickname is the penguins.

Academic and Research Opportunities

YSU offers more than 115 undergraduate programs and more than 40 graduate programs across its seven academic colleges: the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences; the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; the Williamson College of Business Administration; the Beeghly College of Education; the Bitonte College of Health & Human Services; the College of Creative Arts & Communication; and the School of Graduate Studies. It also offers doctorate degrees in educational leadership, physical therapy, and materials science and engineering.

Research institutes on campus include the Center of Excellence in Materials Science and Engineering, the Center for Sports Medicine and Applied Biomechanics, and the Centofanti Center for Health and Welfare for Vulnerable Populations.

On Campus

There are several noteworthy attractions on campus. The Veterans Resource Center is the first of its kind at any Ohio university. The Maag Library houses more than 500,000 volumes and access to the collections of 84 other Ohio libraries and institutions. The Ward Beecher Planetarium is home to university astronomy classes as well as public events and stargazing opportunities. The Butler Institute of American Art houses celebrated paintings by Winslow Homer and Norman Rockwell. And the McDonough Museum of Art, though not technically on campus, is affiliated with the university and displays the work of art students and faculty both.

Notable Alumni

Notable Youngstown State University alumni include actor Ed O’Neill; jazz pianist Harold Danko; autism rights movement leader and author Sean Barron; Simeon Booker, the first black reporter for the Washington Post; author Noah Cicero; and astronomer Thomas Bopp, co-discoverer of Comet Hale-Bopp.

Youngstown State University International Student Insurance Requirements

F-1 students, J-1 students, and J-1 visiting scholars are required to enroll in the YSU international student health insurance plan for the duration of their time at the university.
