Washington State University - Tri Cities International Student Insurance

General Information

Washington State University Tri-Cities, located in Richland, Washington, was established in 1989. It opened in 1946 as the General Electric School of Nuclear Engineering, a partnership between WSU, the University of Washington, and Oregon State University. In 1968, it became the Joint Center for Graduate Studies, and in 1985, Central Washington University and Eastern Washington University joined the collaboration to form the Tri-Cities University Center. In 1989, the Washington legislature established the campus as an independent, degree-granting institution, and it adopted its current name.

Today, WSU Tri-Cities enrolls more than 1,800 students and counting each year. The school colors are crimson and gray, and its athletic nickname is the cougars.

Academic and Research Opportunities

The university offers about 20 bachelor’s degrees and more than 30 graduate degrees across its six colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering & Applied Sciences, Nursing, and Wine Science (Viticulture & Enology). This last college is a unique and somewhat distinctive offering, as Washington state is the second-most productive wine region in the United States.

The campus houses research institutions and labs like the Bioproducts, Sciences and Engineering Laboratory (BSEL), which focuses on identifying non-energy products that could prove useful in promoting energy sustainability; and the Simulation and Integrated Media for Instruction, Assessment, and Neurocognition (SIMIAN) Lab, whose focus is to investigate and understand aspects of human learning across its lifespan, including research in virtual reality and augmented reality.

On Campus

The university is also home to The Art Center, an art gallery that showcases both student and faculty work as well as rotating exhibitions from local, regional, and national artists.

Located along the Columbia River, the campus offers students numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation. Activities include hiking trails and recreation, and the school’s Outdoor Recreation program rents paddle boards, kayaks, tents, and other outdoor equipment to students during the semester.

Washington State University - Tri Cities International Student Insurance Requirements

International Students

All Washington State University Tri-Cities international students (both F-1 and J-1) are automatically enrolled in the university health insurance plan. The university makes only two exceptions: Students who are already enrolled in U.S.-based coverage through an employer or parent / spouse, and WSU students engaged in research outside the U.S.

Exchange Visitors

J-1 Scholars are also automatically enrolled in the International Student Health Insurance Program, but their J-2 dependents are not. They are required to purchase separate coverage that meets the standard requirements of the Department of State, and that also includes a waiting period for pre-existing conditions and no more than a 25% co-insurance per illness or accident.
