Washington State University

Washington State University Spokane International Student Insurance

General Information

Washington State University Health Sciences Spokane, also known as WSU Spokane, located in Spokane, Washington, was established in 1989. It was founded as a branch campus of the flagship Washington State University in Pullman, and in 2010, the WSU Board of Regents officially designated it as the university’s health sciences campus. WSU Health Sciences Spokane offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degrees in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, Speech & Hearing Sciences, Criminal Justice, and Education. Today, it enrolls more than 1,500 students and counting. The school colors are crimson and gray, and its athletic nickname is the cougars.

Academic and Research Opportunities

The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine opened its doors to students in the fall of 2017 as only the second public medical school in the state. Medical students spend their first two years in Spokane, and then some remain while others disperse to three of WSU’s regional campuses in Everett, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver.

Noteworthy research institutions at WSU Spokane include the Sleep and Performance Research Center, the Speech and Language Lab, the Applied Sciences Laboratory, and the Initiative for Research and Education to Advance Community Health (IREACH).

On Campus

WSU Health Sciences Spokane is bordered on one side by the Spokane River and Centennial Trail, and on another edge by downtown Spokane. This prime location offers students opportunities for both outdoor recreation and dining and entertainment attractions.

Washington State University Spokane International Student Insurance Requirements

International Students

All WSU Spokane international students (both F-1 and J-1) are automatically enrolled in the school's health insurance plan. The school exempts only students who have adequate health care coverage through either a U.S. employer or a parent / spouse, or students enrolled at WSU but conducting research outside the U.S.

Exchange Visitors

Similarly, J-1 scholars are also enrolled in the International Student Health Insurance Program, but they are required to purchase a separate plan for their J-2 dependents. The plan must meet the standard minimum requirements as set by the U.S. Department of State, as well as include a waiting period for pre-existing conditions and no more than 25% co-insurance per incident.

Please contact our office for more information, or to email a health insurance waiver or compliance form. This information may be subject to change.
