General Information

The University of West Florida, located in Pensacola, Florida, was established in 1963. It was the sixth member of the State University System of Florida. It opened its doors to students as an upper-division school in 1967, and the first freshmen were admitted in 1983. The school currently offers more than 50 undergraduate degrees, more than 30 master’s degrees, three doctoral degrees, and a specialist degree across its five colleges: the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities; the College of Business; the College of Education and Professional Studies; the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering; and the Usha Kundu, MD College of Health. It enrolls almost 13,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are blue and green, and its athletic nickname is the Argonauts.

In addition to its main campus, UWF operates a branch campus (UWF Emerald Coast) and a branch library in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. It also owns waterfront property on Santa Rosa Island that it uses for recreational, academic, and research purposes. Similarly, UWF has partnered with Historic Pensacola Village, whose owners it purchased in 2001, to create classes and provide staff support for the historical area.

Research Opportunities

Noteworthy research centers and institutes at UWF include the UWF Center for Entrepreneurship; the Gulf Islands Research and Education Center; the Haas Center, which focuses on applied research and strategy development in economics; the Center for Supply Chain Management Excellence; the Archaeology Institute; the Florida Public Archaeology Network; and the Center for Environmental Diagnostics and Bioremediation, which emphasizes modern biological research as it applies to environmental systems.

Notable Alumni

Noteworthy University of West Florida alumni and attendees include author Michael DeMaria; actor David Hart; comedian Jan Hooks; former NASA astronauts Jim Buchili, Kenneth Cockrell, John Phillips, and Richard Richards; and Carmen Maria Martinez, the U.S. ambassador to Zambia.

University of West Florida International Student Insurance Requirements

Both J-Visa and F-Visa students are required to provide proof that they meet the school's insurance requirements.

The school's requirements, as set by the Florida Board of Governors International Insurance Requirements, are as follows: Coverage must last for the full, complete term, including breaks. Payment of benefits must be renewable. There must be at least 80% co-insurance for mental health inpatient/outpatient. The plan must have maternity coverage. The waiting period for pre-existing conditions must last no longer than 6 months. There must be a minimum $200,000 policy maximum for illness/injury. There must be a medical evacuation coverage of at least $25,000 and repatriation of remains coverage of $10,000. There must be a deductible of $50 at the student health center and $100 at all other health care facilities. The policy must not unreasonably exclude coverage for perils inherent to the scholar or student's program of study.
