General Information

The University of Florida (UF), located in Gainesville, Florida, was established in 1853. In that year, the state-supported East Florida Seminary acquired the Kingsbury Academy in Ocala, Florida. The school was relocated to Gainesville in the 1860s and consolidated with Florida Agricultural College in Lake City, Florida. It gained its present name and moved back to its current location in 1905, where it has operated ever since. It currently offers bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, doctoral degrees, and graduate-level professional programs across 23 colleges and schools. UF operates a law school, a medical school, a dentistry school, a pharmacy school, and a veterinary medical school.

UF is the eighth-largest university in the U.S. with an enrollment of more than 54,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are orange and blue, and its athletic nickname is the gators.

Research Initiatives

The university has been classified as an R1: Doctoral University with very high research activity. Noteworthy research facilities include the McKnight Brain Institute, a neuroscience research center; the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience, located in St. Augustine, Florida; the University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies; the International Center for Lightning Research and Testing; and the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, which includes the Citrus Research and Education Center, the largest of its kind in the world.

On Campus

The campus itself has several can’t-miss attractions. The Florida Museum of Natural History was established in 1891 and presents information about the flora, fauna, fossils, and people of the state. Permanent exhibits include the Butterfly Rainforest and collections of fossils. The Harn Museum of Art has both rotating and traveling exhibits, as well as galleries that focus on African art, Asian art, modern and contemporary art, and photography. It also operates a wildlife sanctuary.

Notable Alumni

Notable University of Florida alumni include football players Tim Tebow and Emmitt Smith; sportscaster Erin Andrews; U.S. Senator Marco Rubio; comedian Darrell Hammond; journalist and author Carl Hiaasen; actor Stephen Root; novelist Kate DiCamillo; and Academy Award-winning actress Faye Dunaway.
