Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center

General Information

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso), located in El Paso, Texas, is a public health sciences university established in 2013. It opened in 1969 as the Regional Academic Health Center and previously operated as a branch campus of the TTUHSC in Lubbock since 1973. It’s an independent, degree-granting member of the Texas Tech University System. TTUHSC El Paso is the only health sciences center on the U.S. Mexico border that provides as many comprehensive opportunities for education and treatment as it does. It currently enrolls more than 700 students each year.

Academic Opportunities

TTUHSC El Paso consists of three academic divisions: the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing, and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The medical school is the only one in the nation that requires students to learn Spanish. The university also offers other academic opportunities like Continuing Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education, and the School of Dental Medicine.

The School of Medicine operates several outreach programs designed to increase relations between the school and the community at large. Some programs are designed for younger audiences, like Medventure for Your Future, a conference for sixth- through eighth-grade students held each January, and a two-week Summer Medical Camp. For adults, the El Paso Pre-Medical Development Society is geared toward prospective medical students and hosts a conference presenting information about the application and admissions process.

All international students at TTUHSC El Paso are required to enroll in the university insurance plan. They are required to purchase through the school, and there is no option to waive. The university website does not mention J-1 scholar or exchange visitor programs.
