Florida Atlantic University International Student Insurance

General Information

Florida Atlantic University, located in Boca Raton, Florida, was established in 1961. It was built on Boca Raton Army Airfield, a World War II-era airbase formerly used as a radar training facility. It opened in 1964 with President Lyndon B. Johnson attending the dedication ceremony and receiving the university’s first degree, an honorary doctorate. It was the first public university in southeast Florida and offered only upper-division and graduate level classes; it began offering lower-division courses in 1984. Today, FAU admits more than 30,000 students each year and counting. Its colors are FAU Blue and FAU Red, and its athletic nickname is the owls.

Research Opportunities

Noteworthy research initiatives on campus include a robotics laboratory, ocean engineering programs, an alloy research center, and the Center for Advanced Research in Phenomenology. It’s also the home of the Center of Excellence in Biomedical and Marine Biotechnology, as well as the Center for Ocean Energy Technology. These centers receive state grants to continue and increase research. The university also plays home to an Imaging Technology Center and a NASA Imaging Technology Space Center.

In addition to the main campus, FAU has six satellite campuses in three counties.

Notable Alumni

Notable FAU alumni include Robert Orr, former President of Boeing Japan; Charles Ghigna, children’s poet; Judith Ortiz Cofer, author; and Scott “Carrot Top” Thompson, comedian.

Florida Atlantic University International Student Insurance Requirements

Florida Atlantic University requires that J-Visa students meet school insurance requirements. F-Visa students are automatically enrolled in the school's insurance plan, but they may waive this plan with another that meets the school's requirements.

The school's requirements, as set by the Florida Board of Governors International Insurance Requirements, are as follows: Coverage must last for the full, complete term, including breaks. Payment of benefits must be renewable. There must be at least 80% co-insurance for mental health inpatient/outpatient. The plan must have maternity coverage. The waiting period for pre-existing conditions must last no longer than 6 months. There must be a minimum $200,000 policy maximum for illness/injury. There must be a medical evacuation coverage of at least $25,000 and repatriation of remains coverage of $10,000. There must be a deductible of $50 at the student health center and $100 at all other health care facilities. The policy must not unreasonably exclude coverage for perils inherent to the scholar or student's program of study.
