General Information

Brigham Young University–Idaho, located in Rexburg, Idaho, was founded in 1888. The university is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). It was created as the Bannock Stake Academy, an elementary school. It was renamed the Fremont Stake Academy in 1898, the same year it began to offer high-school classes. It became Ricks Academy in 1903 and Ricks College in 1923, when it began to operate as a two-year junior college. It remained a junior college all the way until 2000, when the LDS Church announced it would become a four-year institution known as Brigham Young University–Idaho. BYU–Idaho opened its doors to students in 2001.

Today, BYU–Idaho enrolls more than 15,000 students and counting each year. The school colors are blue, black, and white.

Academic Offerings

The university offers associate’s degrees and bachelor’s degrees across its six academic colleges: the college of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Business and Communication, the college of Education and Human Development, the College of Language and Letters, the College of Physical Sciences and Engineering, and the College of Performing and Visual Arts. BYU–Idaho’s academic year is divided into three equal semesters known as tracks.

On Campus

About 99% of the student body are members of the LDS Church, and they follow an honor code—regarding matters like academic honesty; dress and grooming standards; and abstinence from drugs, alcohol, and extramarital sex—in line with LDS teachings. A large number of students also take an 18-month (for women) or a 24-month (for men) hiatus from pursuing their degree to serve as missionaries. Devotional services occur every Tuesday, and the school’s honor code requires students to attend weekly church services on Sundays.

Notable Alumni

Notable Brigham Young University–Idaho alumni and attendees (including those from Ricks College before 2001) include screenwriters Jared and Jerusha Hess, anthropologist Phillip McArthur, newspaper cartoonist Brian Crane, author and illustrator Brandon Dorman, and Idaho Lieutenant Governor Mark Ricks.
