J visa insurance plans meet the minimum requirements specified by the U.S. Department of State. Most domestic health insurance plans in the U.S. simply don't meet all of the requirements.
Exchange visitors health insurance is comprised of various benefits, some of these standard benefits may include:
J visa insurance requires a minimum $100,000 per incident in medical maximum. Exchange visitors health insurance would generally cover new illness, accidents or injuries that may occur after the effective date of the policy. Due to high healthcare costs in the U.S., a higher policy maximum is highly recommended. It provides coverage if you need to visit a physician, an urgent care, hospital emergency room, surgery, hospitalization, ICU, labs, x-rays, Rx drugs and other medical necessities.
J1 visa insurance plans participate in PPO networks. These networks generally have many physicians, hospitals and other facilities all over the U.S. that have contracted with them and can bill directly as well as charge network negotiated fees.
Learn MoreJ visa insurance requires that the insurance must cover at least $50,000 in emergency medical evacuation. The U.S. domestic health insurance plans don't provide this coverage because U.S. residents don't really need it. All J visa insurance plans provide this coverage. It would provide the coverage for transportation to the nearest medical facility that can provide adequate coverage.
J visa insurance requires that the insurance must cover at least $25,000 in return of mortal remains. If by some misfortune you were to pass away while studying abroad, this benefit would help your family transport the body back to your home country. Alternatively, some plans arrange for local cremation.
Learn MoreAccidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) would provide a lump sum benefit (in a form of life insurance) if you were to pass away in an accident. If you were to lose a limb or two in an accident, it would provide some lump sum benefit as well.
Learn MoreJ visa insurance plans cover prescription drugs for new medical conditions that occur after the effective date of the policy. However, it would not cover birth control pills or medicines for pre-existing conditions.
Make sure to be compliant with J visa insurance requirements.

Depending on what is most important for you to have covered, there may be a plan better tailored to your needs:
If you intend to visit Schengen countries in Europe, you would need a Schengen visa; this requires compliant Schengen visa insurance. J visa insurance may not provide coverage in Schengen countries. You can make an instant purchase of the Schengen travel insurance and immediately print the visa letter to present to the consulate.
Many J visa holders get medical insurance through their sponsoring organization. While it may provide excellent medical coverage, it does not provide the emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains coverage that is required to meet the minimum requirements of J visa insurance, set by the U.S. Department of State. Standalone evacuation and repatriation plan can be a low cost solution.
If the sponsoring or sending organization has five or more exchange visitors participating it is possible to purchase J1 visa group medical insurance, which would generally be cheaper than individual insurance plans. For very large groups, it is possible to make specific arrangements for easy administration of members.
A work and travel exchange visitor program provides an opportunity for foreign students to experience life in the U.S. as well as find temporary work in the U.S. They are allowed to stay in the U.S. for up to four months during summer vacation. Small group insurance is available for groups of 5 or more. For very large groups, custom products are available designed specifically for a given organization.
