Question:

I am a US citizen currently living as an ex-pat in Italy. I plan to return to the USA in Feb 2020 with my Italian wife and my son (who is a US citizen). I've been looking at all the different insurance plans on your site and it is a bit confusing as to which plan or option I should choose since I am an ex-pat and my wife is a new immigrant etc. Could you please help me choose? My wife will be entering the US for the first time. I am not a resident in the US anymore and the last state I lived in was Michigan, but we will be moving to California and we don't have a fixed address there yet (doing AirBnb for the first month until we find something to rent). So I thought we needed to buy travel/visitors health insurance to cover us until the open enrollment period at the end of 2020 for California. Can I get the domestic insurance for my family after a short while if I am new to the state? Should I just buy the travel insurance for the first few months or so?

Answer:

Unfortunately, as you all are moving to the United States and not coming for a visit you are not considered a visitor.

When you arrive you may qualify for a special enrollment period for an individual plan on the market place. However, there are no plans that we can offer to you.
