I have had a bad experience working with ICICI Lombard insurance. Issues i had with ICICI

1) They do not have any rates negotiated with US hospitals. I have seen when your insurance does not have a negotiated rate, an emergency room can cost upto $5000 vs a negotiated rate of $1000 (based on real experience). But there is a cap on how much ICICI will pay for each kind of service which means my out of pocket would have been quite a bit.

2) ICICI will not pay directly to the hospital. You will have to pay the bills directly to hospitals in the US. Take the bills to India where it will be further evaluated. You could potetially sit with thousands of dollars paid and in limbo. I do not have that kind of money to shell and wait

So my experience with indian insurance has been bad. I have not bought any insurance yet from US for my parents. But i am more inclined towards buying insurance in US even if i have to pay a little bit more.

I purchased ICICI overseas student medical insurance 2 years back when I was traveling to the USA for my higher education. My brother works for ICICI and that's what made me take the policy in the first place. He renewed it the first time. I renewed it the second time recently 1 month back. So here is the problem. Though I have paid for the policy I do not have a copy since their system shows an error. I have paid the money, shown proof of payment as amount debited from bank account, shown transaction record, printed receipts, customer interaction numbers and service/complaint requests, all to no avail. My brother, an emplyee has been unable to do anything fruitful either. Everybody blames it on everybody else. I was guaranteed results within 5 business days and it's been a month since I have paid and I am still uninsured. By the way I am bloody sure and have it confirmed that if something happens during this period, I can sue the company since I paid them but they didnt give me a copy of insurance policy. Well, their system apparently cannot generate it and produces an error. Bravo !!!

Bottomline - Stay away from ICICI Lombard student medical insurance, pay nearly same amount for local insurance policies in university.

Hello SR,

Thank you for your interest in purchasing visitors medical for your relative.

Both Atlas America and Patriot America are excellent visitors insurance plans. They are quite similar and from two different companies.

The waiver of coinsurance feature is not there in Patriot America.

Atlas America - If you go in the network and they bill directly, it is 100% up to policy max. Otherwise, it is 80/20 for first $5,000 and then 100% up to policy max.

Patriot America - If you go in the network, it is 90/10 up to first $5,000 and then 100% up to policy max. Otherwise, it is 80/20 for first $5,000 and then 100% up to policy max.

Of course, all of the coverage above is after you pay the deductible.

Other than that, there are very minor differences in those two plans and some of them not even worth mentioning. I suggest you visit http://www.insubuy.com enter the details and compare them side by side. You will see how little the differences are.

Dear Mr. Khatri,

We need to get medical insurance for our 72 year old relative who will be visiting us for 5 months. There are no major pre-existing conditions.

The Atlas plan seems to WAIVE COINSURANCE within their PPO network. Does Patriot have anything similar ?

Are there any other advantages of one over the other ?

Hereby I would like to convey my hearty "THANKS" to Narendra and Jagruti for their help, advice in resolving an issue with the insurance company, who denied the coverages on the basis of pre-existing, though it is not true in reality. The team helped me (above and beyond) in asking for the 3rd party appraisal, which eventually came in our favour.

They were easily accessible for any kind of help and I sincerely appreciate them.

I will always go with them again in future.
