Mission trip insurance

My son is going to El Salvador in December for a mission trip with the church for approximately one week. He has Type I Diabetes it is controled with insulin. He has full coverage medical insurance right now in the United States. Is this going to be considered a pre-existing condition that will not be covered or will it be covered if I purchase insurance just in case while he is over seas?
